Insoles, arch supports and custom orthotics

These three get lumped together, and they do different jobs.

• An insole is a cushion shaped to fit a shoe. It changes how the shoe feels.
• A prefabricated arch support is a stock shape made in a range of sizes. It adds some support, but it wasn’t made from your foot.
• A custom orthotic is made from a cast of your own foot. Sole Supports are cast with your foot held in its corrected position, then calibrated to you.

How a pair of Sole Supports is made

At the casting, I hold your foot in its corrected position, with the arch as high as your foot can comfortably make it and the heel and forefoot flat, and press it into a foam impression box. That impression becomes the model for your pair.

Sole Supports builds the orthotic in Tennessee to make full contact with your foot in that position, and calibrates it to your body weight, foot flexibility and activity level. The aim is a shell firm enough to hold your arch under your weight and flexible enough to be comfortable on a hard floor.

What they feel like

The first thing most people notice is contact. The orthotic meets the whole arch instead of sitting under one spot, and that can feel like a lot of support at first. Most people adapt quickly. Depending on your feet and the shoes you’re used to, I may suggest easing in over the first several days.

Shoes

A pair moves from shoe to shoe. Bring the shoes you wear most to your consultation so we can talk about fit. If you want orthotics in more than one pair of shoes at a time, additional pairs ordered within three years are made from the same cast, with no need to recast.

How long they last

Sole Supports are built to last for years with normal use. If you want another pair more than three years after your casting, we recast, since feet change over time.
